Western written music is a language that has been developing for thousands of years, and even the music we read today has been around for over years. All music contains these fundamental components, and to learn how to read music, you must first familiarize yourself with these basics. However the complete basics are covered as well: both dummies' and complete idiots' guides are included. For rhythmthe existence of an underlying regular pulse, or stressmust be indicated.

This article will introduce you to the basics of reading music, show you some more advanced methods, and suggest some ways to gain more knowledge about the subject. The top number indicates how many of these note values appear in each measure. Well, this will depend upon person to person, as what is pleasant to one may not be so for the other. A tie is distinguishable because it always joins two immediately adjacent notes of the same pitch, whereas a slur may join any number of notes of varying pitches. For instance, a melody proceeding upward from the first octave can, if moving by step, proceed to the second, third, and fourth octaves without requiring additional octave signs. Higher notes on a keyboard also are notated on the treble clef.

It uses pre-staff notation before introducing the grand staff. Download your Keyboard Note Guide hereto print, fold and place on your keyboard. Music includes a variety of original works, folk songs, and pop styles, many with duet accompaniments. Remember our note values from before: the high C at the end of the first line, and the low C at the end of the second line are half notes, while the rest of the notes are quarter notes. To make notes faster in music, we add a flag.
